Philosophy of Teaching and Learning

Philosophy The ideal outcome of any teaching or learning situation is mutual respect, dignity and empowerment. I believe true learning is a circular process achieved through enquiry, exploration, practice and reflection (praxis) on authentic experiences that are relevant to learners. If I have been effective in the classroom I believe learners will feel energized with a sense of discovery and self-confidence that assists them in their life path.

In the fourth section of this portfolio I present three artifacts that support my philosophy of teaching and learning. First, the results of a Teaching Perspective Inventory based on my actions, intents and beliefs. Next, a reflective scholarly paper I wrote as part of my course work at Brock University outlining my personal perspective on teaching adults is presented. Finally, a certificate of participation for a Giving and Receiving Feedback workshop is included as evidence of my desire to communicate effectively and continuously grow as a person.

April 2007

The Teaching Perspective Inventory (TPI) was designed by Daniel Pratt and Associates to assist educators in collecting and summarizing their ideas about teaching and learning. This is a powerful tool that presents five different perspectives on teaching and learning based on one's actions, intents and beliefs. This was a useful mechanism for me when developing my own Philosophy of Teaching and Learning. With the help of the TPI I have been able to determine my 'dominant' perspective as Nurturing and 'back-up' perspectives as Apprentiship, Developmental and Transmission.
