Teaching & Training Experiences

Teaching & TrainingIn section one of this portfolio I present four artifacts relevant to my teaching and training experiences in adult education environments. First, I present my professional résumé that outlines my work, employment and educational background. Second, my Level 1 Personality Dimensions Facilitator Certificate is presented as a demonstration of my awareness of temperament theory and facilitation skills. The Personality Dimensions course is designed to assist people in understanding human motivators, actions and behaviours. Third, I present student responses to a feedback report I use in my courses. I use this feedback to help me understand the perceptions, experiences and comprehension of learners. Finally, a short video is presented as an example of how starting drum lessons at age 12 has influenced my life path, my interests, and set the stage for my first role as a formal educator.

June 2007

The student feedback provided here is the result of a feedback report I used in my Microsoft Excel Level 1 Course design prototype. From my perspective, I have found providing students with the opportunity to express their thoughts, feelings and perceptions in a safe and consequence free manner is an essential element to establishing relationships and learning environments built on trust and mutual respect. The feedback here is from a particular feedback report that asked three basic questions;
  1. What surprised you about this weeks exercise?
  2. What did you find most helpful?
  3. What did you find least helpful?
I have discovered this anonymous feedback to be an invaluable tool when forming summative evaluations of student comprehension, progress and emotional status in my classes. It also provides valuable feedback relating to resource usability and helps to inform future projects and improvements to existing resources.
As a result of affording students the opportunity to provide anonymous feedback my teaching is increasingly effective, better informed and constantly evolving to meeting the needs of learners.

October 2001

This video is from a very memorable moment in my life and is representative of the transformative impact music has had on me as an individual and educator. Studying music privately and academically since the age of 12 has expanded my circle of friends and colleagues; it has broadened my cultural and musical interests and has expanded options for me in my life path. By virtue of travelling and performing nationally and internationally, I have grown to respect and appreciate the uniqueness of individuals and their cultures as well as recognize that fundamentally, all humans have similar needs and desires in life.
Playing the drums also offered me my first experience as an educator at a local music school and it was these experiences as a drum instructor that prompted me to pursue education at the academic and professional levels. I believe these paths travelled have improved my abilities as an educator because I have been privileged with valuable experiences that assist me in understanding who I am as a person and help me separate the truly important things in life from the trivial. Please enjoy this 2.5 minute glimpse into my life.....on AM Radio.
